Sudden death during sports activities has a profound impact on relatives, society, and athletes. Medical screening programs usually fail to prevent sudden death. We report the characteristics of a series of sudden deaths that occurred during sports in Spain.
Patients had significantly higher prolactin concentrations: female patients had a mean [SD] of 37.1 ng/mL [24.9] vs. 13.5 ng/mL [7.2] for female control subjects (p=.001), while male patients had a mean of 15.3 ng/mL [9.5] vs. 7.6 ng/mL [2.2] for male control subjects (p=.006). Patients and control subjects did not differ on concentrations of TSH, ghrelin, or cortisol. The group differences could not be attributed to differences in age, gender, smoking, body mass index, ethnicity, or the socioeconomic status of the family of origin.

India is having a rich vegetation with a wide variety of plants, because of the extreme variations in geographical and climatic conditions prevailing in the country. Plants have been used since ancient times for the treatment of various ailments. Especially, Kani tribal communities in Thodu hills of Kerala meet their healthcare needs by using non-timber minor forest products and preparations based on traditional knowledge. They still depend on medicinal plants and most of them have a basic knowledge of medicinal plants which are used for first aid remedies, to treat cough, cold, fever, headache, poisonous bites and some simple ailments. The present study was initiated with an aim to identify traditional healers who are practicing herbal medicine among the Kani tribals in Thodu hills of Kerala, India and quantitatively document their indigenous knowledge on the utilization of medicinal plants, particularly most common ethnomedicinal plants.

We performed a parallel-group, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in in 177 patients with acute URI over a 5 day period.
A total of 137 urine samples and 46 serum samples, corresponding to 154 self-confessed designer drugs consumers in Ibiza island, were analyzed for the presence of designer drugs: amphetamine and amphetamine derivatives (methamphetamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), p-methoxymethylamphetamine (PMMA), p-methoxyamphetamine (PMA), etc.), ketamine and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid. Among this population, coming both from the forensic clinic and from the emergency room of a hospital, a total of 99 cases were found positive for some designer drug. This study shows the prevalence of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) among designer drug users, sole or in association with other drugs. Also, the mixture of MDMA with other designer drugs, ethanol and/or cocaine is shown to be more likely to produce toxic symptoms requiring clinical attendance in a hospital emergency room. These findings along with the consumption history, the concentrations of drugs and metabolites in urine and serum and the toxicological significance for the interpretation of some MDMA metabolites such as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymethamphetamine (HMMA) are discussed in this study.

In this article we describe topics associated with violence and aggressiveness. We review the psychological, social and neurobiological bases of aggressiveness according to different theoretical views. Different ideas about dangerousness are listed, and at the same time we try to delimit this term within the forensic psychiatric field. We classify different types of dangerousness and their relation with related psychiatric disorders. Finally, we locate dangerousness in the Civil and the Criminal Code and we supply scales for its assessment.

A crude extract of the leaves Justicia pectoralis reduced the formation of histamine-induced wheals in sensitized guinea pigs (p < 0.05) and also reduced histamine-induced tracheal smooth muscle contractions (p < 0.05). It blocked the effect of contraction produced by histamine in the airways; this property supports folklore claims for its use as an antihistamine.

The main objective of this article is to encourage criticism of and reflection on the indication for psychiatric hospitalization through the mentioning of some recent National Supreme Court of Justice rulings that affect our practice, as well as through a critical review of the traditional concept of dangerousness, to provide support for the two possible types of psychiatric hospitalization: urgent hospitalization secondary to certain and imminent risk of injury and therapeutic hospitalization. It is further proposed that said indication be delivered by a team including the psychologist, and that this indication be monitored by the courts.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic non-communicable disease with high prevalence in the North American and Caribbean region. Diabetic Foot Syndrome which is an associated complication can lead to the development of wounds and ulcers which can become infected. Justicia secunda, a plant known locally in Barbados as Bloodroot used in folklore for wound healing, was selected to test its ability to aid diabetic wound healing by antimicrobial activity. It was therefore tested against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Enterococcus feacalis (clincal strain) which are commonly found in diabetic wounds.
Suicide is a complex issue and a source of discussion between different disciplines. Suicide assessment and management research had received a huge attention in the field. Argentina has a legal framework focused on protecting human rights. Malpractice and liability discussion is offered in cases of suicide in psychiatric patients recently admitted to an inpatient setting. Imminent and certain risk of damage is the legal requirement for involuntary psychiatric admission in terms of Mental Health Law in Argentina.

The formation of large scale biofilms on dialysis membrane for 72 h was proved to be the best surface. In microscopic studies, very few exopolysaccaride fibrils, indicating a rather loose matrix was observed at 48 h. Further, thick exopolysaccaride, indicated higher adhesive properties at 72 h which is evident from ruthenium red staining. Among the plant extract used, Justicia wynaadensis leaf and Aristolochia indica (Eswari) root extract showed significant reduction of anti-biofilm activity of 0.178 OD and 0.192 OD in inhibiting mature biofilms at 0.225 OD respectively, suggesting the possible use of these extracts as efficient anti-adhesive and biofilm-disrupting agents with potential applications in controlling biofilms on surfaces.
Temporary disability is the condition that workers face when, as the result of illness (common or professional) or accident (work-related or not), they are temporarily prevented from performing their work and require health care. The management of temporary disability is a medical act that involves (in addition to a complex clinical assessment) obvious social, occupational and financial connotations and requires continuing medical follow-up from doctors, as well as responses to medical-legal conflicts. The regulatory framework on the subject is extensive in the Spanish setting and highly diverse in the European setting. Beyond the regulatory framework, the repercussions of temporary disability are self-evident at all levels. Although determining temporary disability is a common medical act for practicing physicians, it is not exempt from risks or difficulties arising from the assessment itself and the characteristics of practicing medical care. Established medical-legal conflicts include the processing of health data and the requirements for transferring information related to workers' temporary disability to their company's medical services. The interest and usefulness demonstrated by the data obtained from forensic medicine for public health require the incorporation of these data into general healthcare information, as it could be essential to the surveillance of worker health. The recommendations established by medical societies, as good practice guidelines, are especially useful in this type of conflict.

In nature there are several terpenoids with a characteristic gamma-dioxygenated system on the A ring, and many of them show interesting pharmacological properties. We have developed a novel strategy for the synthesis of these terpenoids involving three stages: (a) the selective epoxidation of commercial polyenes, (b) titanium(III)-catalyzed cyclization of the epoxypolyprenes thus obtained, and (c) Pd-mediated remote functionalization of the equatorial methyl group attached at C-4 on ring A of the cyclic terpenoid thus formed. This strategy has proved to be useful for the synthesis of the natural labdane rostratone (1) and related terpenoids, as well as for advanced synthetic approaches toward the pharmacologically active products aphidicolin (2) and pyripyropene A (3).
